Gear Orbea Aletta Second Opinion |
I read Mark's review of the Aletta (here) and thought I would share my opinion of the bike since I'm 40 - 50 lbs lighter and don't produce near the same torque. First, even though this bike was a size larger than I would have ordered, I had no problem getting comfortable on it due in large part to the rather short stem length. I was very impressed with the ride and found that I was extremely comfortable on this bike even though it was all stock, including the saddle, stem and bars (I simply added a set of Dura Ace pedals). What impressed me most about the bike was it's handling; in the aerobars at speed I was in total control of the bike and felt completely at ease immediately. I was making my way around a looping course with tight turns at 25+ mph and never felt the need to get out of the aerobars - impressive!
I also thought the frameset was stiff where it needed to be and comfortable at the saddle and aerobars. While the wheelset is not the stiffest set I've used, because of my weight difference and the fact that I spin around 100+ rpm, I was not put off by the American Classics. No doubt the bike would be faster and stiffer with a set of Topolinos, HED 3s, Zipps or Mavic Ksyrium SLs, but the AC's work reasonably well for me and certainly make a good set of training wheels. The Dura Ace 10 drivetrain was flawless, with super quick and direct shifts that are clearly superior to Dura Ace 9; I'm upgrading my racing bike immediately. I really liked the FSA SLK Carbon Mega Exo crankset and bottom bracket both in performance and looks. I was impressed with the comfort of the SI Nova Tri saddle and consider it an appropriate racing saddle. Finally, the Profile AluminX aerobars are stiff, comfortable and fully adjustable.
The complete bike at $2,800 represents a very good value; the frameset, though, with its proper geometry and high quaility construction, tubing and paint at this price point, would have to be considered a bargain.
My overall impression - I could race this bike straight out of the box.
